Zeroemissions’ first project in Lebanon

Zeroemissions has been awarded the project “National Bioenergy Strategy for Lebanon”

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lebanon has awarded Zeroemissions the project “National Bioenergy Strategy for Lebanon”. The UNDP and several Lebanese ministries were present at the project’s launch, which took place in Beirut in July.

The project, with a time frame of 12 months, will be carried out in collaboration with the Dutch consultant SQ Consult B.V., the French company Amane Energy and the local consultancy firm ECE Consultants.

Its main aim is to support and advise the UNDP by producing a study that defines and develops in depth all the essential key elements that will become the National Bioenergy Strategy for Lebanon. This document will promote the development of biofuels, biomass and renewable energies and will help the Lebanese government reach its target for 12% of the total energy produced in the country to come from renewable sources in 2020. This advice will also be used for decision-making in the construction and start up of various demonstration stations planned in the short term.

The proposal of various financial measures will also be included, adapted to each type of project, such as, for example, to the development of Clean Development Mechanism projects (CDM).

In order to successfully reach these targets, the study will establish the present bioenergy potential in Lebanon and determine its capacity to contribute to meeting the target for 12% of the total energy produced to come from renewable energy sources in 2020.

The study will be characterised by a realistic approach, always adapted to the country’s needs and particular characteristics. In this way it will provide feasible results in terms of: available resources and technology; cost analysis; funding capacity; necessary infrastructures; standard practices; environmental, economic and social sustainability criteria; and national and international interest in developing bioenergy as an industry in Lebanon.

The study will also include all the legal, institutional and tax aspects necessary to prepare the way to the various future scenarios in the development of bioenergy.

The present project, based on the aforementioned criteria, will therefore provide support to the Lebanese government, acting as its reference and lead in key aspects such as the country’s National Bioenergy Strategy.
