New Technologies

The objective of the new technologies department is the identification and implementation of innovative technologies or modifications of existing technologies to reduce greenhouse gasses emissions by:

  • The improvement of energy efficiency of industrial processes and facilities. Energy reduction entails a reduction of CO2 emissions. The Green Paper on Energy Efficiency of the European Commission (2005) considers energy saving as the quickest, the most efficient, and the most economical way to reduce greenhouse gasses emissions, as well as to improve air quality.
  • The reduction of high global warming potential gasses (CH4, N2O, HFs, SF6 and PFCs) by substitution of those gasses for other ones with similar applications, or by modifying processes so that the use of those gasses is not necessary . If there are no viable alternatives, we try to monitor potential sources of emissions through their continuous monitoring.
  • Reduction of tropospheric ozoneprecursors (VOCs, NOx and CO), as they have potential for global warming in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

The projects carried out in this department are multidisciplinary, covering areas as diverse as agriculture, industry, residential and commercial sector, or transportation. The main activities of the department are as followed:

  • Technology surveillance. Identification of BATs.
  • Proposals for emission reduction projects
  • Technical and economic viability studies
  • Monitoring the implementation of identified measures

The team, mostly formed by scientists and engineers, work hand in hand with universities and R&D centres, to identify the most promising technologies and find applications that can have an environmental benefit in order to implement them at businesses in short-medium term.
