Zeroemissions do Brasil has signed a new contract for the recovery of waste generated in pig farms in the region of Paraná. The project will be conducted in collaboration with several independent pig farmers in Paraná.
The execution of this Clean Development Mechanism project is linked to the installation of biodigesters that will treat waste produced by pig farms. These farms are all in the western region of the state of Paraná, in Brazil. It is estimated that 25,657 CERs will be generated per year, over a period of 10 years. The biogas captured in this project will be used to produce energy for the region.
The power station will start operating this year with the aim of optimising the Clean Development Mechanism project. The farms that will be involved in this programme are Granja Felicidade, Granja Nossa Senhora Aparecida, Granja Lago Azul and Complejo Larissa.
The biogas will be collected through a process that consists of covering the manure lagoon with a PVC geomembrane, the subsequent bacterial decomposition of the waste, resulting in the generation of biogas, and the suction of this biogas through an extraction pipe.
The project offers an innovative solution to waste treatment, one of the big environmental and legal problems facing the farming industry. A huge amount of methane, which is highly pollutant, is constantly being produced. Moreover, each tonne of methane emitted into the atmosphere produces the same greenhouse effect as 21 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Therefore, the burning of this biogas results in huge benefits in the fight against climate change.
The installation of projects to recover the biogas generated in agro-industrial waste is one of the activities that has made a decisive contribution in the generation of carbon credits. There are currently 312 projects being carried out worldwide, whose accumulated emissions reductions up until the year 2012 is estimated to be 67 million tonnes of CO2.
Zeroemissions is carrying out another project of this kind in Brazil, in the cooperative Lar, also in the western region of Paraná.
